The picturesque town of Glenties is a five-time winner of Ireland's tidy Towns competition. Located in the heart of the Donegal Highlands, at the meeting point of two glens on the northwest edge of the Blue Stack mountains. It is the largest centre and has the most populations in the Parish of Iniskeel. Several famous people came from Glenties. Patrick McGill the Navvy Poet,came from the glen of Glenties, just a mile up the road from Avalon. The McGill Summer School is held in July every year. Here you can examilne his works and hear some very interesting discussions and debates. Brian Friel's play "Dancing at Lughnasa" is based in Glenties and is written about his mothers family who hail from Glenties. TRADITIONAL MUSIC. This part of Donegal has always been noted for its strong tradition of Irish Music. During the summer months there is plenty of music in the local bars, but of season you will hear the irish music in the Glen Tavern on Saturday night in the Highlands Hotel on Sunday evening.
