Driving
Directions: When you arrive in Dunedin, follow the directions for the Otago Peninsula.
Arts Content is 13 mins drive along the Harbourside road. We are one and a half kilometres past Macandrew Bay. We are right on the corner of Portobello and Castlewood Roads. Castlewood Road is the road that leads up the hill to Larnach Castle.
Look for the sign to Larnach Castle and then our Arts Content Gallery sign of an artist's palette supported by a giant pencil and paint brush.

Local Area
Attractions: The Otago Peninsula and the Otago Harbour are famed for their natural beauty, unique wildlife and relaxed lifestyle. It's proximity to the City of Dunedin allows the visitor to make the most of the natural wonders on offer whilst, at the same time, being within easy reach of all the attractions of a busy, cosmopolitan metropolis.
Historic Attractions
*Larnach Castle and Gardens, New Zealand's only castle, built in 1871, is conveniently located at the top of the hill from Arts Content, only a 5 minute drive away.
• The Fletcher House at Broad Bay
• The Portobello Museum at Portobello Village
• Taiaroa Head Lighthouse, Fort Taiaroa and the Armstrong Disappearing Gun at Taiaroa Head are accessible from the Albatross Colony
• The Maori Marae at Otakou
• Glenfalloch Homestead and Gardens just before Macandrew Bay
Wildlife Attractions
The Albatross Colony - Arts Content is almost halfway to the world renowned Taiaroa Head Albatross Colony, the planet's only mainland nesting colony of the Royal Albatross.
• Close to Taiaroa Head and its distinctive, much admired red and white lighthouse are opportunities to see, close-up, the rare Hooker's Sea-lion, New Zealand Fur Seals, the exceedingly rare Yellow-eyed Penguins and little Blue Penguins who come ashore at dusk on Pilot's Beach.
• In Company Bay itself, easily seen from the deck, of “Arts Content,” regal Black Swans, Spoonbills, Herons, varieties of duck, Cormorants, Oyster-Catchers and many other species of marine and inter-tidal birds are amongst the frequent visitors. Pods of dolphin have been seen cruising in the harbour chasing baitfish and salmon.
• An enormous, old, bull Sea-lion (we call him “Big Mac”) often hauls himself up onto the sandy beach of nearby Macandrew Bay.
• Papanui Inlet and Hoopers Inlet (The Inlets) are a mecca for many species of marine, marshland and wading birds.
• Our Burmese Red cat, “Obie” specifically asked to be included in this section. Although he is not wild, he likes to pretend that he is.
• The Marine Studies Centre at Portobello provides a “hands on” experience for young and old alike to have a close look at marine creatures. There is also an Aquarium.
• The Otago Peninsula is a jewel of nature, a kaleidoscope of wildlife, vegetation and sea. Everything about the Peninsula creates a special feeling. That's why we live here. We'd love to share it all with you.
Arts and Crafts
The Otago Peninsula is known throughout New Zealand as a mecca for Artists and Craftsmen.
We will be happy to provide you with a copy of “The Open Arts Trail” showing you the location of artists, potters, weavers, a knife-maker and craftspersons.
The Arts Content Gallery - set in the garden of Arts Content - displays the luminous pastel paintings of Cathryn Shemansky www.cathyshemansky.com
You are welcome to browse at your leisure and, perhaps take home with you an original painting or a print, of Peninsula scenery and wildlife, as a lasting memory of your holiday.
