Norfolk Bay Convict Station is a delightful house that now offers visitors a warm and comfortable stay in a heritage setting. It stands right on the shore of Little Norfolk Bay with the jetty in front of the house making an ideal spot to fish for flathead. In 1838 convicts built the house on Norfolk Bay. It served as the terminus of the railway that linked ships from Hobart with the penal settlement of Port Arthur. For many years visitors and goods were accommodated here before riding in the railway carts pushed by convicts across the peninsula. This was Australia's first railway station. There are five suites in the house, three of them have ensuite bathrooms and the other two have their own private bathrooms. Each room is themed differently but all guests enjoy the sitting room with its log fire & complimentary port and sherry. The house is fully licensed and a good selection of wines and beers is available. A glass of wine on the front verandah as the sun goes down is the best way to end the day. The full cooked breakfasts feature local produce like venison sausages from Doo Town and Tasmanian Smoked Salmon, fresh fruit from the garden in season, free range eggs, home made bread warm from the oven, a selection of Lorella’s home made jams and Lynton’s freshly brewed coffee or a selection of teas. The local attractions include Port Arthur Historic Site ten kilometres away, but there are other historic sites, including the convict coalmines, that should not be missed. Some say that the Tasman National Park has the best coastal walking in the country, from ten minute strolls to eight hour and overnight walks. The views are breathtaking, the geology fascinating and the wildlife prolific. Evening meals to suit any palate or budget are available at one of the many restaurants within a few kilometres. |
