Out the back, a neatly manicured parterre garden and fountain-pond leads to a photogenic 17th-century carriage house. The ‘Balcony Room’ is the most appealing of the four guest rooms and can be combined with a neighbouring sitting room to form a suite. Its unique, personally designed furniture includes a washstand in parchment leather with nickel basins. The truly vast bathtub has a stone surround and the toilet door is humorously disguised. ‘Paola’s room’ knocks you for six with it vivid pink walls, stripy carpet and a bathroom that feels much bigger than it is, thanks to the infinity effect walls of mirrors.
