Local Area Attractions: Art lovers are thrilled with the selections available on Main Street, Hill City, with Jon Crane Watercolors a highlight. The Black Hills Institute of Geological Research has a world-class dinosaur museum, and children love to dig into their Everything Prehistoric Gift Shop. Many visitors take a leap into the past, boarding the 1880 Train. It is a must for buffs of the Old West. The tracks of the 1880 Train parallel Old Hill City Road, allowing the Train to connect Keystone with Hill City, chugging and puffing along the way. There are also 112+ miles of the railroad bed which have been restructured with a user-friendly gravel base, for those who have the urge to exert their own energy. Heading out of town in either of two pine-scented directions, hikers, runners and bikers enjoy the satisfaction of quality time spent on the George S. Mickelson Trail. The Trail originated as Rails to Trails, a nostalgic reminder of the late 1800's railroad and mining days, when Hill City was first settled. Following that vein, Wades Gold Mill is very close to Hill City on Deerfield Road. At the Mill, you will be rewarded with a wealth of historical information, and even have the chance to try your hand at gold panning. The Mill demonstrates the gold mining and processing techniques of the Gold Rush days. Other Black Hills offerings include Iron Mountain Road, Needles Highway and Cathedral Spires of the Peter Norbeck Scenic Byway. For adventurous hiking, try Sunday Gulch, Little Devil's Tower and Harney Peak...all accessible from Sylvan Lake. Visit history-in-the-making Crazy Horse Monument; also Reptile Gardens and Bear Country USA are hits. Chuckwagon Suppers and Western Music Shows; and the Black Hills Playhouse are evening favorites. Custer State Park has The Wildlife Loop where wild burros nuzzle your vehicle windows, and buffalo herds still roam where the antelope play, and prairie dogs scamper. For a cool descent into the earth, visit Wind Cave at Wind Cave National Park; for a warm dip, Evans Plunge in Hot Springs; for kid entertainment, Flintstone's Bedrock City in Custer. All are scenically reached from centrally located Hill City.
