"Come up our quiet country lane to West Hill House Bed and Breakfast Inn, an historic 1850's farmhouse that's only one mile from Sugarbush skiing, golfing and tennis resort and adjacent to its Robert Trent Jones Sr. championship golf course - and just seven miles from Mad River Glen. We're off the beaten path, but close to restaurants, shopping, quaint villages, covered bridges and outdoor recreation beyond imagination. With warm weather hiking, biking, fishing, swimming, canoeing, golf and tennis, spectacular foliage season autumn colors and wintertime downhill and cross country skiing, snowshoeing, and sleigh riding all right nearby, Sugarbush and the Mad River Valley is the best! Our nine peaceful acres with mountain views, meadow, ponds, gardens and woods provide a setting for relaxation and getting away from it all. Enjoy the comfortable big, bright sun room, the great room and the wonderful library - all with wood-burning fireplaces, oriental rugs, original art, and antiques. Put your feet up on our farmhouse front porch, the canopied back deck or the airy gazebo. Read a book or watch the ""critter shows"" as birds and chipmunks, raccoons, our resident beaver, red foxes, deer and an occasional black bear or moose entertain you. Eight comfortable, well-appointed twin, queen or king bed guestrooms with TV/VCR, gas fireplace and private, full, en suite bath, all with steambath and/or jacuzzi tub and shower. Down comforters and pillows, thick towels, good reading lights. In room phones with voicemail and DSL internet access. Delicious breakfasts, afternoon and bedtime snacks. Specialties include Dotty's famous sticky buns and on occasion, flatbreads from our wood-fired brick beehive oven. Candlelight dinners on Saturday nights in season or by reservation, for six or more guests. Raiding the cookie jar is encouraged. West Hill House is particularly well suited for small weddings, civil unions, elopements, rehearsal dinners, Sunday brunches, birthday and anniversary parties, family reunions and business retreats. All planning and catering is done in-house. Our sincere desire is to make events held at West Hill House easy for the hosts and memorable for all. Thirty five guests is our winter indoor maximum. In warm weather, when we can use our canopied deck, our new barn and lovely grounds, the maximum is seventy-five guests. When we cater a weekend event, we reserve the entire inn for event guests for the weekend. When we host a ""planned elopement"" for just a couple, we waive that requirement. West Hill House is a gay and lesbian friendly B&B. For the bargain-minded, we offer several special packages including Vermont Quilt Festival Packages, Golf Packages with privileges at Sugarbush and other nearby courses, Last Minute Planners Specials and Spa Packages with treatments at either ALTA Day Spa or Mad River Massage. Check our Packages & Specials section for details. We are State licensed for purchase of wine, beer and spirits. 500 bottle wine cellar, excellent selection of local and other premium beers. We request that guests not bring beverages to the inn. Children over age 12 welcome. We are a non-smoking inn. Guests at West Hill House have a good time hiking, exploring the area, and checking out some of the quirky only-in-Vermont special spots that don't get wide press. Have you ever seen or heard of Hope Cemetery where there are headstones that include sculptures of a husband and wife sitting up in bed? There's a stock car headstone, a bi-plane, a soccer ball - the list of unusual monuments is endless. It's where the stonecarvers who work the Rock of Ages Quarry - the largest granite quarry in the world and only 30 miles from here - lay their own to rest. Fascinating! How about a floating bridge? A spider web farm? Or a one houre driving loop that shows off eight of our picturesque covered bridges? Of course, cycling, golf, shopping and museum-going are popular draws, as well. Then there's just plain hangin' out with a cookie, some lemonade and a good book. Several weekend guests came up from New York City to see a play on the 22nd at the Phantom Theater, another well-kept secret in Warren. The Play, ""Je Regrette Tout"" was written and directed by a friend of theirs, Jeanne Darst. Theater arts are a big part of the creative scene in the Mad River Valley, providing a showcase for the large number of extremely talented people who live here and for others from afar, like New Yorker Darst, whose works find an enthusiastic audience here. ....... On the front porch, up in back in the birch gazebo, or in any number of spots around the inn, you'll find the perfect place for a good book or a good conversation - or a nap! FRIDAY, JULY 29 THROUGH SUNDAY, AUGUST 21 THE VERMONT FESTIVAL OF THE ARTS IN THE MAD RIVER VALLEY Here's an opportunity to experience the incredibly broad scope of the Arts in the Valley - and to take advantage of a West Hill House Special Deal ! The Festival's multiple daily events include music, theater, open studios, gallery special events, culinary arts, art happenings, workshops, demonstrations and talks - and of course, Dotty's favorite, since she's one of the three women who have run the event for the past eight years, the BIG RED BARN ART SHOW . The exhibit, open Wednesdays through Sundays during the Festival, is held in the big barn at Lareau Farm, home to American Flatbread - a truly unique restaurant that's a must visit for all our weekend guests. This year, thirty-three artists are participating in the show and over 130 original two and three dimensional works will be exhibited. The caliber of the work is very high and many paintings and sculptures find new homes as a result. WHAT''S NEW AT WEST HILL HOUSE... It took a while, but the last room in the barn is finally finished - and it's a space that's sure to be appreciated by guests who like to play! The Game Room is in the big cupola of the barn, an airy aerie that's equipped with foozball, darts, poker table, board games and the big TV that was in the Sun Room until Eric decided we needed a huge flat screen home theater thing in the Sun Room. We added a tuner, a DVD/VCR player and the surround sound speakers that were in the Sun Room. Shall we call it the Sports Bar? No matter what we call it, now there's a place to unwind, play games and make noise without worrying about disturbing guests who retire early. .."
