This elegant mansion, circa 1750, is one of the most historic homes in our area. Its outstanding architecture has earned Aspen Hall the distinction of being "one of the finest Georgian period homes in the United States." Most of the original features of the 22-room house remain; for example, the 13 x 38 foot grand hall still has its original 40-inch board-and-batten doors with their large strap hinges. Built of native limestone, Aspen Hall is situated on seven park-like acres on a stocked trout stream. The property was known as "Mendenhall's Fort" during the French & Indian War which started 250 years ago. George Washington attended a wedding here in 1761. Guests can refresh their spirits by strolling Aspen Hall's grounds while listening to the peaceful babbling of the Tuscarora Creek as it flows under the footbridge. Full body Swedish relaxation massage is available by appointment with the resident Licensed Massage Therapist. Rebecca G."Becky" Frye and Charles S. "Charlie" Connolly are the resident innkeepers at Aspen Hall Inn. We have strong interests in history and archeology, are historical interpreters at Fort Frederick State Park in nearby Washington County, Maryland, and are members of the Northern Shenandoah Valley Chapter of the Archeological Society of Virginia. In 2004, Becky retired after teaching music in Berkeley County, West Virginia public schools for 36 years. Charlie recently sold Accent Printing & Copy Center in downtown Martinsburg after 26 years of operation and is a licensed massage therapist. |
