Situated in the midst of Charleston's premiere private residential district, just twelve houses from the Battery, the Hayne House was built in 1755 and is associated with Revolutionary War hero Isaac Hayne. Later the home of U.S. Senator Arthur Peronneau Hayne (famed as Adjutant General of the U.S. under President Andrew Jackson), the house is surrounded by some of the most noteworthy 18th and 19th century houses in America, including the Miles Brewton House (ca. 1769) directly across the street, which served as British headquarters during the Revolution, and the Nathaniel Russell House (ca. 1808), which is one block away |
