The Baird Tavern Bed and Breakfast invites you to step back in time and share the colorful, romantic history of a magnificent pre-Revolutionary home built in 1768 by James Baird and used as a tavern for the first fifty years of its existence. Let the fireplaces, beehive ovens, paneled walls, chestnut beams and wide pine flooring provide a backdrop for your journey. The Baird Tavern often entertained forty to fifty teams a night where weary travelers ate and drank in the taproom and then slept feet to the fire, heads resting on their buffalo robes. In the kitchen or keeping room with its huge fireplace the women bustled around cooking and tending little ones. Babies were birthed in the borning room just off the kitchen. Early in the 19th century the house was purchased by the Bartholomew family who owned it for eighty years. During that time it was a stagecoach stop and legend says the former Baird Tavern was part of the Underground Railroad during the Civil War. At the end of the 19th century Dr. William Ashley used the house with its clear mountaintop air as a restorative retreat for his patients. Today the inn retains its 18th and 19th century authenticity. Be part of the ongoing history at the Baird Tavern Bed and Breakfast.
