Located within walking distance of shops and attractions WISE MANOR is one of the oldest BED & BREAKFAST homes in Jefferson. Built in 1851 on the ferry road into pre-Civil War Jefferson, the home has been in the same family since 1908. Jacob & Ernestine Sterne, Jefferson postmasters, were distinguished residents. General Buell was a guest here during Reconstruction.KATHERINE RAMSAY WISE, Jefferson's town historian lived in this Houston Streethome from 1927 until her death in 2000, at the age of 85. Mrs. Wise worked at restoring the Victorian cottage throughout her lifetime. She opened Wise Manor to overnight guests in the 1970s when Jefferson needed accommodations for visitors to its annual Historic Pilgrimage. Your innkeeper is Katherine's daughter, Susan Wise. |

Driving
Directions: DIRECTIONS TO WISE MANOR: From I-20 at the Marshall/Carthage exit, take Hwy 59 north to Jefferson. (Jefferson is 17 miles north of Marshall from the Interstate.) Continue past the County Road 2208 intersection, cross the Big Cypress bridge, slow down and pull right at the 55 MPH sign, and watch for the sign “Jefferson Historical Riverfront District.” Turn right on East Jefferson Street. (If you pass the Inn of Jefferson motel, you’ve gone too far.) Turn right on Line Street, which is just beyond the park/playground. Follow Line Street to the Water Tower. The street to the left of the tower is Houston Street. We’re at the 312 Houston, and we’ll have the light on for you! |
