Local Area
Attractions: Mt. Desert Island's unique history began during a volcanic period 400M years ago. Molten rock formed its granite core. Glacial ice covered the island 18,000 years ago; and as it moved, it contoured the island's mountains and valleys. It is the largest rock-based island with granite cliffs rising out of the Atlantic Ocean. Somes Sound is the only natural fjord on the East Coast of the U.S. One of the first European explorers was Samuel de Champlain in 1604 who named the island, I'lles des Mont deserts, because of its bald peaks viewed from the sea. By the 1890s tourism was a major industry, and the island still has one of the most comfortable summer climates in the United States. Acadia National Park comprises over 46,000 acres on Mount Desert Island. There are 26 mountains in Acadia National Park, and the 57 mile network of crush-rock-surfaced carriage roads offer 16 unique stone bridges and 2 gatehouses. Wildwood Stables offers a variety of horse drawn carriage tours. Tour the 27 mile-long scenic drive Park Loop Road. Hike or drive to the summit of Cadillac Mountain (highest point on eastern seaboard), visit Sand Beach, Jordon Pond House, Otter Cliffs, and Thunder Hole. Sieur de Monts Spring features the Wild Gardens of Acadia, the Abbe Museum, the Park Nature Center, and the covered Spring itself. Acadia offers over 120 miles of trails all over the island with spectacular views. These trails range from casual walks to challenging hikes. Terrain varies from lake shores, sea-side paths and deep woods to mountain summits with views of the ocean and outer islands. Hike the Western Mountains of Bernard and Mansell, Beech Mountain, Acadia Mountain, St. Saveur Mountain, Flying Mountain, and stroll The Big Heath, Wonderland and Ship Harbor Nature Trails. The nature sanctuary at Indian Point combines woodland and ocean side trails offering great sunsets. Picnic in scenic Pretty Marsh or near the natural Seawall. Canoe, salt-water fish, go antiquing, catch a show at the Acadia Repertory Theatre, enjoy dinner and a cabaret show at the Deck House located in the Great Harbor Marina, or golf nearby at Southwest Harbor’s Causeway Club overlooking Norwood Cove. Visit one of the most photographed lighthouses built in 1858 towering 56 feet above the Atlantic Ocean. Wander through the Wendell Gilley Museum of Bird Carving and the Oceanarium. Swim from the beach at Echo Lake, canoe on Long Pond, sea kayak around the island, and take a cruise or ferry to outer islands. |
