William Sidney Smith, a South Carolina attorney and state representative, built the Beaufort Inn in 1897 as a private home and summer retreat. In the early 1930s, Mrs. Gordon Black purchased, renovated and reopened the home as “The Beaufort Inn.” The the Inn was renovated in 1994. New additions maintained the original architectural style of the home and the interior Mahogany trim work was done by local craftsmen. Each room was uniquely named after local plantations. In just the first year after reopening, the Inn hosted all types of guests ranging from vacationers to business travelers to military families to movie stars. Both Julia Roberts and Paula Zahn enjoyed week-long stays at the Inn. Robert Duval, Lyle Lovett, Jimmy Buffet and Sharon Stone have all dined in the Inn’s gourmet restaurant, |
